THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

The Sermon on the Mount is a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus found in the gospel of Matthew chapters 5, 6 and 7. Jesus urged his listeners to live in a way that fosters justice, peace, harmony, and well-being within and among people. many people today are unhappy. We are all incomplete without God in our life. In His sermon, Jesus thoroughly covers 19 different topics that are relevant to any Christian life no matter what the time or the age. The problems that we face today are basically the same problems that people faced in Bible times. Jesus, because He was God, knew that. Jesus spoke about the things that we all have to deal with. He spoke practically to everyone.

Matthew 5

1) The Beatitudes (Blessing)

Jesus said, “blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek., blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, blessed are the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers ,blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness. We are to bless everyone .

2) Salt and Light ( Witnessing )

Jesus also gave some short parable-like sayings about the way that his followers should affect the world: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.As Chris-tians, we are in the world, but we are not of the world. That doesn’t mean we are to isolate our-selves from the world, but rather that our lives as Christians must come in contact with others in the world around us in order for us to fulfill our purpose as “the salt of the earth.”

3) The Fulfillment of the Law (keeping God’s laws)

God’s standards for morality and behavior never change. We may try to justify ourselves but Jesus lets us all know, in no uncertain terms, that we will still be accountable to God for his never changing standards for morality.

4) Murder (Anger)

Jesus then said that this commandment had a far greater application than merely unlawful killing. Murder is an expression of the sin of anger in the heart. People who follow God are not only to refrain from unlawfully killing other people, they are also to repent from the sin of heart-anger.

5) Adultery(Morality and Marriage)

Though our society takes adultery lightly, it is a serious offense in the eyes of God. First, adultery destroys the very fabric of His institution of marriage. God created Adam and Eve, one man and one woman and joined them together in marriage as companions. God’s plan in creation was one man and one woman. Regardless of what man may think, the creative plan of God never alters. God makes it clear that He is the avenger when the marriage vows are broken through adultery

6) Oaths (Promises)

Don’t swear at all. God is not separated from oaths and promises. All oaths equally involve
God. Hence it does not matter much whether you swear by God loudly or silently. Oaths are simply unnecessary due to the continual presence of God. Therefore do not swear at all.

7) Eye for Eye ( Revenge)

Your should not take vengeance into your own hand and also don’t even oppose the evil person when the evil is being done.

8) Love for Enemies (how to treat an enemy)

Jesus though us to treat them as well as we treat people that we like. We must be kind and respectful to them and also pray for them .

Matthew 6

9) Giving to the Needy (giving)

When people are in need, we should help them out of love .The God-kind of love. We should always help others because it is what God wants us to do. It is God’s will. We should never do things for other for what we can get out of it or people praise us. That’s why Jesus said to do it privately .We know that God sees everything and God sees what is done privately.

10) Prayer

Jesus though us how to pray . Praying is talking to God . One of the way that we build our relationship with God is by praying . Jesus said “when you pray go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then our Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward us openly .We shouldn’t pray to impress other people. God is our only audience.

11) Fasting

Fasting is to be seen by God . When we fast, we groom ourselves as normal, for we are fasting to God, not to impress people.Fasting must be done without any outward appearance of fasting Therefore, it should include anointing your head and washing your face.. By doing this, only God will see your fasting and He will reward you openly

12) Treasures in Heaven (Our life’s objectives)

Our focus should be on pleasing God, on doing his will, on valuing his rewards rather than the temporary rewards of this world. Public praise is one form of short-lived reward. Jesus now turns to the shallowness of physical things. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal”.(Matthew 6:19-20) .

13) Do Not Worry (True security)

We were created and designed by God and our father who in Heaven knows very well what to give us . It’s a clearly stated in Matthew 6:25-26 “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”He is our all day provider and protector .
Matthew 7

14) Judging Others

To judge is God’s responsibility not us . Jesus warned that we will have to account for every word we have spoken. One of the features of the manner in which God will consider our lives, is by the standards that we have judged others.. We have to be careful for we will be judged.

15) Ask, Seek, Knock ( Seeking God )

We are commanded to “knock” as one who desires to enter the house knocks at the door. That is such a beautiful illustration of prayer. We are to knock at the door of grace, and how do we knock to obtain entrance? Ask, believing you shall receive. A family member does not knock on a door expecting to get thrown out on the sidewalk. He goes there believing that those on the other side of the door will receive him. ” Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. ” ( Matthew 7:7-8)

16) The Narrow Way

The Way to heaven is clearly marked, but scarcely traveled. It’s a narrow, often difficult, road to walk that has many hills and valleys, but no turns it is straight and will remain straight. The pavement might have a few cracks in it, but don’t worry. It turns to gold toward the end.

17) You Will Know Them by Their Fruits (False Prophets )

The Lord Jesus Christ tells us that we must enter the kingdom or destruction awaits. But He also tells us that we must be on guard for those who claim to be showing us the right way to the kingdom and yet who are sending us the way of the broad gate and the broad way. First of all, we must be on guard for those who profess to be true teachers and yet who twist the truth in their teaching.

18) I Never Knew You

I believe the word here stressed about : 1): Doing the Father’s will 2): Speaking on behalf of God and/or doing supernatural feats 3): Being engaged in lawlessness (evil )4): God knowing us.

19) Build on the Rock

We do not have to wait for the storm to come in order to know what the end result will be. A person who builds on a faulty foundation will come to ruin. Anyone who tries to have a spiritual life on any basis other than Jesus is building on sand. “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25)

The Sermon on the Mount is a trustworthy guide for us. Each of us should urgently examine ourselves against it and with God’s help reestablish a strong and loving relationship with Him by humbly submitting to Him in obedience to the Sermon’s instructions. Sermon on the mount is the key to success . It’s a life lesson to every human in this world .We should ask God to be our teacher in our everyday lives . “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” Matthew 7:7
